August 11, 2013 - Starr County
A pair of Ringed Kingfishers fly over at Salineño
Caspian Tern, considered somewhat rare in Starr County
A mixture of song along the "Dump Road", starting with the buzz of what could be a Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, but I just couldn't get a definitive look. Listen also for the harsh, "rough engine" song of two Cactus Wrens, the slow chatter of a Bullock's Oriole, and finally another gnatcatcher buzz.
The tinkly song of a Black-throated Sparrow, also along the Dump Road.
Beat-up Pyrrhuloxia at Falcon State Park
Another bird singing at the butterfly garden
A huge Bird Grasshopper
Greater Roadrunner in a classic "Beep Beep" pose...
Great Egret posing with falcon Dam in the background. (Impossible to make out, but on that spit in the background were 14 Black Skimmers in the mix, another coastal bird rather rare inland!)
Nysa Roadside Skipper
Great Southern White
Large Orange Sulphur (you can see part of the orange upperside on the bug on the right, where part of the left wingtip is broken off)
Southern Dogface, named for the "poodle" pattern on the forewing (look for the "eye", then use your imagination to see the "dog" facing right...)
Mallow Scrub Hairstreak
Scruffy juvenile Vermilion Flycatcher (was hoping Daddy would show up... ☺)
